First I will explain some things that you should know before you begin channeling. You MUST always protect yourself and others by invoking a prayer or chant of protection.
This need not be a long process but you do want to:
a. ensure you are asking for information and knowledge for your highest good only.
b. invite any spirits who'd like to support you in your reading for your highest good.
c. ask that a white or golden healing light be sent down to you and envelope you and then as you visualize this happening ask that it be extended out to the room you are in to clear and positively energize it. You may also ask that it be extended out to the entire building, block, neighborhood, city and / or country or world you live in.

To begin channeling, once you've invoked the prayer of protection, have the following items available:
Paper and pen / pencil. You will be writing the responses and impressions that come to you as they come.
Crystals: certain crystals have helped me and many others to hone in on the impressions and enhance the connection with the spirit realm. These crystals are: amethyst, snowflake obsidian, angelite, and prehnite can be good for healing you as you do this work. Apatite is great for removing negative emotions. I generally hold the stones I've chosen for the session in my hand as I ask the questions in my mind.
Research: Do a web search for these to see what they look like and find out more about their properties. Feel free to research the various crystals and gemstones that may resonate with you. Any metaphysical and / or spiritual bookstore will have these items for purchase. If you do not live near one, get them delivered to you through an internet supply store.
Begin by writing down the first question you'd like answered on your paper and relax. As you begin getting impressions write down anything that comes to you. Over time you'll get better at this and know what is important and what is not. Write whatever you can at this point. It may help to close your eyes at first to make it easier to see what's coming through your third eye or psychic center.
NOTE: Be sure your questions are not multi-layer or too complex. Start with easy yes or no questions first and move into the more difficult or complex questions as you gain confidence and skill. You're just learning so it's ok if it's not perfect. You'll still get a general impression as to the answer for your question and possibly some great insights right away. Each experience will be different and you will likely encounter unique personalities from each of the spirits you communicate with.
It is important to note that you must be in the best possible state of mind when doing this. The information that comes through is colored by your state of mind. If you are angry or mad about something or are fearful and have doubt, you will get information that may be tainted by that and may come across as sounding demonic and creepy.
As long as you have invoked the prayer of protection and asked for your highest good to be served, you'll be fine and will not contact anything bad. I also recommend never channeling when drunk or on drugs as this can tend to confuse and possibly scare you more than help.
Now that you've begun getting impressions and have written them down, end the session by thanking any and all spirits who've attended for your highest good for joining you and for the information they have provided.
Next, take a look at what you've written and see how you feel about the information. You may be surprised by how easy it was or you may need to keep at it until it becomes easier to understand the information coming through. Either way, keep at it and it will get easier and your skill will increase.
You probably no longer need the pen and paper once you've gained enough skill and experience and can begin doing readings for others in person. I do not recommend doing these readings for money until you have a proven track record with yourself, friends and family and can feel good about the information and service you are providing. You should also learn about spirits, spirit guides, angels, how they interact and what their purposes are before attempting paid readings as you will likely be asked to explain these things as an expert.
Many people depend on the information and it is crucial that you be honest while breaking bad news to them gently and in a supportive manner. Remember all things end up being positive if you wait long enough and give life a chance to show the benefits of the situation.
